“This may come as a surprise to the Echo Park mustache brigade, but there was a time when the Sunset Strip had the hottest shows in L.A. From the Laurel Canyon era of the Byrds and the Doors to the heavier arrival of Guns N’ Roses and Metallica in the ’80s, venues such as the Roxy and the Whisky A Go-Go became as famous as the rising rockers that played them. But the new music scene has largely moved east since Sunset’s glory days, leaving the neighborhood to pay-to-play high school punk bands and alt-rock leftovers — with two poolside exceptions. Blocks from the Whisky and the Viper Room, a pair of boutique hotels are trying to reinvigorate the Strip with on-the-verge music and Eastside attendees. “
